It has been rumored countless times over the past couple of years that Apple is interested in making an electric car. The project is reportedly referred to as Project Titan internally. There have been all kinds of rumors about Apple’s car ambitions but the latest report from Bloomberg claims that Apple has given up on its electric car ambitions for now. Apple is no longer said to be making an electric car to compete with the likes of Tesla.
The report says that Apple has shifted its attention from making an actual car to developing self-driving software that it can deploy in partnership with existing car manufacturers.
It adds that over the past few months hundreds of members from the Project Titan team have been “reassigned, let go, or have left of their own volition.” Months of strategy disagreements, supply chain challenges, and leadership flux have apparently contributed to the decision of focusing entirely on self-driving software.
Apple never really confirmed that it was working on a proper car so it’s not like the company is going to comment on this report to give the public a sense of what’s happening behind closed doors. It may have given up on an electric car for now but that doesn’t mean there’s anything stopping the company from developing one on its own at some point down the line.
