Amazon Could Become An Internet Service Provider In Europe

amazon-signAmazon had relatively humble beginnings where they primarily sold books. They later expanded to include all kinds of products, and in recent times the company even began delivering groceries. They have also branched into music streaming, original video programming, and now it seems that they could soon start to sell internet access.

According to a report from The Information (paywall; via Android Police), they have heard from their sources that apparently the company is planning on becoming an internet service provider over in Europe. This feature will be part of the Prime subscription service which makes the $99 a year subscription a really awesome deal.

As to why Europe first and not the US? After all Amazon is from the US and usually they tend to release features and services for its home country first. Apparently this is because of certain regulations in Europe which require broadband providers to provide wholesale access to their network to competing companies.

This is similar to how carriers in the US work where they offer access to MVNOs, such as Google’s Project Fi which uses networks belonging to other carriers. Details about Amazon’s plans are still scarce at the moment, but like we said, if the report is true it looks like Amazon’s Prime subscription is starting to become a whole lot more attractive.
