If you’ve been holding on to hope that perhaps some day Verizon might offer you a data plan, the odds of that happening appear very slim. Even though its rivals AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint are going back to unlimited plans in one way or the other, Verizon is holding firm on its belief that unlimited data plans are of no use. “People don’t need unlimited plans,” is what a senior Verizon executive is reported to have said when asked about the plans during a conference in New York today.
Speaking at an investor conference earlier today, Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo said that “At the end of the day, people don’t need unlimited plans.” This should give us a good idea of the carrier’s mood on unlimited data plans.
“You cannot make money on an unlimited video world,” he added while saying that Verizon’s data plans are less complicated when compared to the competition. Even though its rivals offer unlimited data there are restrictions on tethering and even HD video streaming.
Shammo said that Verizon believes it’s more customer-friendly to have data plans that let them know how much cellular data they have and then they can do as they see fit, even if it involves tethering with other devices to share cellular internet.
