Uber today announced that it’s going to be developing a new facility in Detroit in order to be closer to conventional car companies that are based in Motor City. The new facility will enable Uber to better partner with these companies as well as with tier-1 suppliers as it takes its self-driving car ambitions to the next level. The confirmation came from Uber vice president Sherif Marakby during the SAE Convergence conference in Novi, Michigan.
Uber first showed off its self-driving car a few months ago and just last week it started the public trial. The company’s self-driving cars are now being used to pick up actual passengers in Pittsburgh.
Since the company is still finalizing the lease on its new facility, it’s not providing information like precisely what the facility will be meant for and how many employees will work in it. Even the location has not yet been confirmed as Uber says that its new digs will be located in the metro Detroit area.
It’s interesting to note that Marakby made this announcement because he worked at Ford for more than 25 years before joining Uber, so he’s quite familiar with this area. Since joining Uber he has been based out of the company’s research facility in Pittsburgh where the self-driving team is currently stationed.
