Earlier Sony announced the PS4 Slim which is essentially a slimmer version of the current PS4. Given that Microsoft also has a slimmer version of the Xbox One in the form of the Xbox One S, this did not really come as a surprise. However if you’re looking for an upgraded model of the PS4, Sony has also officially taken the wraps off the PS4 Pro.
So what can we expect from the PS4 Pro? Sure, Sony has confirmed its existence but they have never really talked about its specs, at least until now. The new console will feature a 1TB hard drive and double the GPU power, thanks to Sony adapting technology from AMD’s Polaris graphics architecture.
It will also support 4K resolution meaning that games will look sharper and more detailed than ever. Sony also states that even if your TV or current setup does not support 4K, maybe you have an older TV or monitor, not to worry as games will display at Full HD and in some instances, might even provide a higher framerate.
Unfortunately one of the downsides is that the PS4 Pro will not have a 4K Blu-ray drive which is admittedly rather disappointing. According to this tweet, it has been suggested that Sony wants to focus more on gaming and perhaps less on other forms of multimedia content. It is also possible that by omitting the feature it would cut down on costs and thus improve profit margins.
We suppose whether or not you would actually need a 4K Blu-ray drive is up to you and how you use your console. If you’re after pure gaming then we guess it’s not really a big deal, but if you were hoping for a complete multimedia package, it could be a deal-breaker. The new PS4 Pro is priced at $400 and is expected to be launched on the 10th of November, 2016.
