Samsung Will Not Be Remotely Deactivating Galaxy Note 7 Handsets

A report from over the weekend suggested that Samsung could be planning on remotely deactivating Galaxy Note 7 handsets that have not been returned. Given that we recently learnt about how a Note 7 exploded in the hands of a 6-year old boy, we actually support that idea if it means that there are less defective Note 7 handsets out there in the wild.

However it turns out that the rumors are false. According to a report from Android Central who reached out to Samsung to confirm the reports, it seems that they will not be deactivating Note 7 handsets. Instead they have stated that all official guidance with regards to the safety and recall of the Note 7 devices will be published on their website.

In case you’re learning about this for the first time, the original report came from Reddit in which the poster claimed that this is how Samsung France would be handling the issue. “We were also told that every recalled phone will be REMOTELY DEACTIVATED after Sept. 30th. It means that we practically have no other choice than following the procedure.”

We’re not sure if the information was just flat out a rumor/lie or there was some kind of miscommunication, but from Android Central’s report it sounds like no, the remote deactivations will not be happening. In any case if you are still holding onto the Galaxy Note 7, you should really consider returning it.
