Over the past few years, OnePlus has made a name for itself by launching handsets with respectable specifications at attractive price points. The company also tweaks software for its handsets. Users in every other market except China get its Oxygen OS ROMs while those in China get Hydrogen OS. Both are based on Android but differ in the level of customization. OnePlus today announced that in order to improve the update experience it’s merging both Oxygen OS and Hydrogen OS.

OnePlus shoots for a near-stock Android experience with the Oxygen OS ROMs. The user interface doesn’t have any major tweaks or customizations that weigh down the system whereas Hydrogen OS gets big tweaks which give it a character of its own.

The company has had enough of its resources being divided to create two versions of basically the same thing so it has decided to merge the two together. It says that one of the main benefits of this exercise will be to speed up software updates and it will also be able to continue improving the quality of these updates.

Developers at OnePlus will now be focused on a single software update release and user interface so not only will that save time but will also provide them with more space to grow and improve the overall experience. Whether the team takes inspiration from Oxygen or Hydrogen OS for its next major software update remains to be seen.
