Netflix may have started out as a platform to stream movies, TV shows, and other content from conventional sources but it has now transformed into an original content powerhouse. It’s creating its own TV shows, movies, and documentaries many of which are doing very well with viewers across the globe. Netflix’s original content ambitions don’t end here. The company’s CFO David Wells has said that Netflix actually wants its library to consist of 50 percent of pure original content within the next few years.
The company’s CEO Ted Sarandos said earlier this year that in 2016, Netflix is going to release over 600 hours of original content, a significant increase over the 450 hours of original content it released last year.
It’s still not enough to achieve the 50/50 mix that the company is shooting for, but it’s certainly getting there. Wells has said that this strategy is part of Netflix’s “multiyear transition and evolution toward more of our own content” and that it’s already “one-third to halfway” there.
Netflix is home to some of the most popular TV shows right now. You don’t need to look beyond House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Stranger Things to know that the company is on to something with its original series.
