It was reported just a few hours ago that Apple and British supercar manufacturer McLaren have been in talks for a potential acquisition. The report claimed that these talks have been going on for a couple of months now. McLaren didn’t immediately comment on the report but it has now issued a rather terse one-line statement which essentially shoots down the report.
The Financial Times reported this morning that Apple is looking to acquire McLaren in a move that would clearly indicate that the company has ambitions to become a player in the automotive industry. So far, there have only been rumors about Apple working on a car, the company hasn’t officially confirmed its automotive plans as yet.
If it did acquire McLaren, it would obviously buy it for its position in the industry. McLaren makes some of the best high-performance cars and runs a distinguished Formula One team so it has a lot going for it.
There haven’t even been any rumors about McLaren looking to sell or potentially giving up a significant stake to an investor. “We can confirm that McLaren is not in discussion with Apple in respect of any potential investment,” is all that McLaren is saying on this matter right now.
A source at McLaren is quoted as saying that there’s absolutely no truth to this report, that have been no talks with Apple and absolutely no chatter about it. Then again, we often see denials come before a major announcement, so perhaps they’re just playing the media? Or not. What do you think?
