It was rumored a couple of months ago that GoPro could be working on a new cloud storage service for its cameras which would enable users to upload their footage to the cloud and then access it from anywhere. This service has been officially announced today at an event which has already brought us the company’s first drone and its new action cameras, it’s called GoPro Plus.
Details of how GoPro Plus will function were leaked last month but today GoPro CEO Nick Woodman provided official information about GoPro Plus and how it’s going to operate.
Those who want to use GoPro Plus will have to pay $4.99 per month for this service. When they are subscribed, photos and video from their compatible GoPro cameras will automatically be uploaded to their GoPro Plus as long as the camera is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi.
The uploaded footage and photos would then be easily accessible through GoPro’s mobile and desktop apps. However, users will only be able to download the files and edit them locally. They can’t start editing a video or photo on one device and pick up where they left off on another.
Cloud storage is limited to 35 hours of video, 62,500 photos or a combination of the two. Both videos and photos are stored at up to 1080p and 12 megapixel respectively regardless of their original resolution.
Subscribers will also receive access to a library of royalty-free music which they can use in their videos. Paying $4.99 for GoPro Plus every month gets them 20 percent off any GoPro camera accessories and mounts as well. GoPro Plus goes live on September 29th and it’s compatible with the company’s new Hero5 Black and Session action cameras.
