Google wants you to go beyond the conventional flat photo and selfie. It wants you to take 3D 360-degree virtual reality photos and it has now released an app that lets you do just that. The Cardboard Camera app has been released today by Google and it’s available now for both iOS and Android users. Like the Google Cardboard VR viewer, the app works with the phone you already have, so no new hardware is required to use this app.

Google’s Cardboard Camera app enables users to take virtual reality photos that are three-dimensional panoramas. It captures striking detail so things that are near in real life look near in the photo and things that are far, look far.

Simply look around to explore the image in all directions and even hear the sound recorded when you were taking the photo to relive that moment exactly how it happened. Capturing a VR photo using this app is easy, just hold your phone vertically, tap record, and then turn around as though you are capturing a panorama.

VR photos captured with this app can easily be shared with friends and family, the app itself will generate a link which can be emailed, texted, or posted in online apps. Viewers will need to have a Cardboard VR to get the intended immersive experience from these photos.

The Google Cardboard Camera app is available as a free download for iOS and Android.
