We recently reported that Android’s SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer teased some kind of milestone for Android for the 4th of October, and now that reports of the OS merger have surfaced, it kind of makes sense as to what Lockheimer could be talking about. Known as “Andromeda” internally, this would help expand Google’s reach on laptops.
In fact this shouldn’t be surprising as there have been hints of such a move. Earlier this year Google confirmed that Android apps will soon be arriving on Chrome OS, so if anything this merger of the operating systems make sense. However from the earlier WSJ report, it sounds more like Chrome OS will be folded into Android, meaning that Android users should not expect any major changes on their end, or at least that’s what we’re assuming.
We should also point out that the WSJ report claimed that Project Andromeda will not be ready until 2017, meaning that Google could be unveiling the project officially on the 4th of October, but not release it until next year. In any case it is a pretty big move and seems to follow in Microsoft’s footsteps where they have in a way unified Windows 10 for mobile and computers, so check back with us next week for the details.
