Back in the day, alphanumeric passwords used to be one of the ways we protected our phones and computers. These days they are still being used, but we are starting to see biometric security becoming commonplace, such as fingerprint scanners and if companies like Samsung have it their way, iris scanners could also become standard in the future as well.
That being said for users of Chrome OS, you’ll be pleased to learn that a future build of the operating system could see Google take advantage of fingerprint scanners. This is according to Chrome Unboxed (via 9to5Google) where they have discovered evidence pointing towards Google adding fingerprint support to Chrome OS in the future.
Of course at the end of the day the onus falls onto the manufacturer of the Chromebook to install fingerprint scanners, but assuming that they do, they will be able to take advantage of Google’s baked-in support versus having to create their own. Given that Android already has support for fingerprint scanners, we suppose Chrome OS getting the feature as well was just a matter of time.
No word on when we will start seeing fingerprint scanners appear on Chromebooks, but if you’ve always thought that Chromebooks/Chrome OS could do with beefier security, perhaps you won’t have to wait much longer.
