Snapchat has a video calling feature which enables users to share a live video stream from inside a conventional text chat. Facebook has now created a similar feature for its Messenger app. The standalone app already lets you chat and share stuff with your friends and now it enables you to share live video with people in your network using the Instant Video feature.

Granted, Facebook Messenger has enabled users to make video calls since last year, but Instant Video is a more lightweight feature that’s meant to encourage more video usage inside the messaging app. It easily lets users share video from a window in Facebook Messenger.

“Instant Video is a reflection of the ubiquity of video — we simply expect to have that ability in real-time, all the time. With Instant Video, you can bring your conversations to life in the most authentic way — seamlessly and instantly,” Facebook explains.

The feature is live now on Facebook Messenger for iOS and Android. When both contacts are viewing an open Messenger conversation, tap on the video icon in the top right corner to start sharing video in real-time.

Audio will be off by default but can easily be turned on with one tap. The video is going to float over the active text conversation so you can continue chatting even as the video is being shared live.
