It has long been rumored that Comcast may launch a mobile phone service that a confirmation has finally come through from none other than the CEO himself. Speaking at an investors conference, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts revealed that the company is going to launch its network by mid-2017. It’s going to focus its efforts on Wi-Fi connections which will be the backbone of this network. When a Wi-Fi network isn’t present the Comcast phone service will run on Verizon’s network.
We last heard about Comcast launching a possible Mobile Virtual Network Operator service several weeks ago and we now know for sure that there was truth to those reports.
Roberts didn’t reveal any more details about this service during his talk at the investors conference, so it’s unclear right now what this service is going to be called, precisely when it’s going to arrive, and how much Comcast is going to charge for it.
Comcast is going to rely upon its massive network of more than 14 million Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots across the United States. These includes hotspots in public locations such as coffee shops as well as those in customer homes which feature an optional “guest mode” for sharing the internet connection with other people.
