However that was back in the day and over the years, EV charging stations have begun popping up more frequently, and in a recent announcement by BMW and Volkswagen, they have announced that they have installed nearly 100 EV charging stations along the coastal highways in the US.
To be more specific, they have installed 95 charging stations along Interstate 95 on the East Coast, from Boston to Washington, DC, and along Interstate 5 and Highway 1 on the West Coast from Portland to San Diego. These charging stations offer up to 50kW or 24kW DC charging, meaning that they are faster compared to the 240-volt Level 2 chargers found in other locations.
They will also use SAE Combo fast charging which is supported by the BMW i3 and VW e-Golf, but there are also CHAdeMO plugs for other vehicles like the Nissan Leaf. Granted it won’t be as quick as refueling a car, but according to BMW and Volkswagen, it should take about 20 minutes for drivers to recharge up to 80%.
