You may have heard rumors by now that Apple is going to do away with the standard 3.5mm headphone jack in the iPhone 7 and that it’s going to introduce wireless earphones instead. A new report suggests that these earphones will be called “AirPods” and that Apple is also going to target the high-end headphone market with this product.
The report claims that AirPods are going to feature a custom wireless chip that’s “Bluetooth-like,” this low-power technology will pair the AirPods with compatible devices like the iPhone 7 to provide a premium sound experience.
It’s believed that Apple has developed its own Bluetooth-like chip and that one of the purposes of doing this was to launch its own-brand Bluetooth headphones with which it can target the high-end market while positioning Beats products in the mid-range segment of the market.
Apple may also use this low-power wireless communications technology for products other than headphones, it could be used for smart home products as well as connected cars. The possibilities will really be endless.
Apple is not expected to bundle these wireless AirPods with the iPhone 7. The company is said to ship EarPods that are compatible with the Lightning connector instead. Customers will obviously be able to purchase the AirPods should they so desire.
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about the AirPods. A trademark filing has already confirmed this moniker a few months ago.
