Apple today announced its second-generation smartwatch – the Apple Watch Series 2. It builds on the foundation that the company laid with its first smartwatch and adds some features that customers were regularly asking for. One of the biggest additions to the Apple Watch Series 2 is that it’s swimproof aside from the fact that it has a built-in GPS, both features will certainly appeal to users with an active lifestyle.
No major changes have been made to the design itself. It looks very much like its predecessor however the Apple Watch Series 2 will be available in a ceramic white finish that’s not available with the original Apple Watch.
Apple Watch Series 2 is swimproof up to 50 meters so even the most ardent of swimmers can use it to track their progress without fear of ruining their smartwatch. The built-in GPS enables the Apple Watch Series 2 to perform mapping on its own without requiring a paired iPhone.
There’s a new processor under the hood which Apple claims to be 50 percent faster than its predecessor, it also promises twice the graphics performance of the original Apple Watch. The company says that the display is 50 percent brighter than its predecessor as well.
Apple will soon release watchOS 3 which is going to bring a handful of new features and applications to the smartwatch. This upcoming software was detailed earlier this year at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Apple Watch Series 2 comes with watchOS 3 straight out of the box.
The company has also created a Nike+ version of the Apple Watch. It’s basically the same watch that has some additional software features for runners and those who love working out. It also comes with unique bands that have all been designed with keeping workout comfort in mind.
The Apple Watch Series 2 in aluminum sport as well as the Nike+ version both start at $369. Pre-orders will start on September 9th while watch OS 3 will be released on September 13th. The sport and stainless steel versions of Apple Watch Series 2 will be released one week after watch OS 3 is released while the Nike+ version of this new smartwatch will be released in late October.
