In the latest numbers from a three month period ending in July, Kantar found that the Apple Watch owned 33.5% of the US smartwatch market, and across Europe, Apple dominated at 31.8%. According to Lauren Guenveur, consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel, “In the three months ending July 2016, 47% of wearable sales in the U.S. occurred in the smartwatch category, versus the more basic fitness bands. Apple continues to dominate this segment.”
However despite those seemingly impressive figures, in the grander scheme of things it isn’t that great. Kantar found that in the US, only 15.2% of consumers owned a smartwatch or a fitness band, whilst in Europe, that number is only at 8.1%, so in reality while Apple is dominating the smartwatch market, that market isn’t as huge as say the PC or smartphone market.
Apple has yet to confirm the official figures for the Apple Watch. The company has stated in the past that the reason for this is because they think the numbers could help its competitors, so for now we’ll have to rely on third-party data to figure it out.
