By now Volkswagen’s “Dieselgate” scandal should be pretty well-known to everyone. Not only will this scandal cost the company a pretty penny in how much they will be settling with customers, but it has also cost them a lot of money in terms of their company’s value as well as their reputation which has undoubtedly taken a hit.
However it seems that it is not over. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it seems that Volkswagen could be potentially facing criminal charges in the US as the Justice Department has apparently uncovered evidence of criminal acts. The report claims that the carmaker and federal prosecutors have been in talks over a settlement regarding these charges.
The charges have yet to be specified, but it is expected to have significant financial penalties. Assuming that Volkswagen and the authorities can figure out how to go about settling it, it is expected that it should be able to conclude the case by the end of the year, although The Wall Street Journal notes that it is possible the timing might slip.
It is possible that Volkswagen could bounce back from this scandal eventually, but safe to say that the confidence that many customers have had in the company and its cars have been shaken.
