Back in the day, say maybe 5 years ago, 2-year contracts were pretty common amongst carriers. This meant that customers could purchase a brand new handset at a very low price, as long as they were willing to sign with the carrier for the next 2-years with a new plan. However these days carriers have started to move away from this.
In fact according to a report by PhoneArena, it would seem that Sprint is planning to move away from 2-year contracts in their stores. They have received an internal memo that allegedly states that come 26th of August, Sprint will no longer be offering 2-year contracts to customers who walk into their stores. This will apply to new customers and existing customers who are upgrading or planning to add a new line.
Instead the memo is asking Sprint’s reps to get customers to sign up for leasing or monthly installment plans, where customers will be able to pay back the cost of the phone over the course of the next 24 months, depending on the contract. However it would seem that maybe Sprint isn’t 100% done with 2-year contracts.
The memo also mentions that if customers are willing to walk away from the store due to the lack of a 2-year contract, reps are to direct them to Sprint’s website or telesales where the 2-year pricing contracts are still available.
