NBC has inked a deal with one of the most popular online services – Snapchat. As part of this deal, the broadcaster is going to produce original content for Snapchat. Content is going to include material from its popular shows like The Voice, Saturday Night Live, and Fallon. The first original show NBC produces for Snapchat is going to be a scaled-down version of The Voice where coaches from the show are going to judge auditions submitted by users.
NBC is also going to broadcast content from the 2016 Olympics through a dedicated channel in the Snapchat app. Content will include highlights from the events as well as behind the scenes clips.
The network does point out that none of the content that it’s going to produce for Snapchat is going to be exclusive to the ephemeral messaging service, so it will be up for grabs for other services as well, services like Instagram which recently launched a carbon-copy of the Snapchat Stories feature.
“If the content works in other places, we’ll put it there,” said executive vice president of business development and digital distribution at NBCUniversal Ron Lamprecht. NBC is going to sell ads for shows that it creates for Snapchat so you will have to bear advertisements while you watch the tiny version of The Voice on your smartphone.
