Just last month, Microsoft confirmed that it’s going to drop Skype support for Windows Phone 8, 8.1 as well as Android devices powered by version 4.0.3 and below. Even though support will no longer be available on these versions of Windows Phone, Microsoft has revealed till when the apps will continue to work with some limitations and when they will stop working on Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1.
A significant chunk of Windows Phone users will not be able to use the official Skype app as it reaches the end of the road for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1. They will only be able to use the app with some limitations until early next year.
That’s also going to be the case for Windows RT as well as Android smartphones and tablets that are running version 4.0.3 and under. This step is being taken as Skype is being moved from P2P to the cloud which Microsoft says is going to improve features like call quality, reliability, video calling, and more.
Users who would like to continue using the app will then need to buy a handset that runs on Windows 10 Mobile. There aren’t that many handsets available right now that come with Windows 10 Mobile straight out of the box, but plenty of devices eligible for an upgrade to the latest iteration of the OS do exist and are readily available in the market.
