One of the longstanding rumors of the iPhone 7 is Apple’s decision to do away with the headphone port. Instead users are expected to connect their headphones either via Bluetooth or Lightning (via an adapter if their headphones do not come with Lightning cables by default). This was apparently a decision that Samsung mocked.
During the company’s announcement of the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung marketing VP Justin Denison was quoted as saying, “What to know what else it comes with? An audio jack. I’m just saying.” Of course Samsung did not mention any companies specifically, but with their fierce rivalry with Apple, it’s not that hard to figure out how Denison might be referring to.
That being said, it is interesting because Apple has yet to officially launch their next-gen iPhone, meaning that if Denison was mocking Apple, it is based completely on rumors and speculation. We should also point out that Apple is not the first company to do away with the headphone port on their handset.
Companies such as LeEco and Motorola have in recent months launched handsets without the headphone port. In fact Oppo actually beat everyone else to the market back in 2014 with the Oppo R5 that also did not have a headphone port, so really Apple would not be the first. However like we said, Samsung’s rivalry with Apple is well-documented enough where their jab at the Cupertino company shouldn’t really surprise anyone.
