That being said, Quake Champions (whose gameplay trailer made its debut last week) still has yet to reveal its pricing model. This means that we could be looking at either of those options mentioned above. According to PC Gamer who spoke to id Software’s head Tim Willits, it seems that they’re still discussing the best way to price the game.
According to Willits when asked about whether it could be a free-to-play title, he said, “I can definitely say that is a really hard problem, and so for us we’re trying to figure out exactly what people want more of, and how they perceive it. And I’m not even trying to be cagey! It’s not like we know and just aren’t trying to tell anybody, we don’t know and we’re still trying to figure this out.”
That being said, the majority of triple A titles we’ve seen so far tend to be of the up-front retail price variety, so there is a good chance that id Software could be sticking to that, but either way with the game still quite a long way from release, we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime what kind of pricing model would you prefer?
