NFC “Visa Payment Ring” Can Now Be Pre-Ordered By Everyone

Earlier this year, we reported that Visa had worked with NFC Ring to deploy an NFC ring that would allow people to make payments with it. The ring was initially given to athletes taking part in the Rio 2016 Olympics, which makes sense since athletic clothing doesn’t really come with a lot of pockets for wallets, and wearing a ring could also be safer than walking around with wads of cash.

The good news is that if you loved the idea of an NFC mobile payments rings, you’ll be pleased to learn that NFC Ring has now made the ring available to everyone, meaning that if you’re so inclined, you will be able to purchase one for yourself. Right now pre-orders for the ring

Right now pre-orders for the ring are being taken and it will set you back $53, which is admittedly not too much to ask for the convenience. Keep in mind that the VISA payment was only an Olympic experimentation, and that VISA has not announced if and when it would support payments using this ring for the general public.

The NFC Ring can be used for other purposes such as unlocking smart devices, doors and transmit information — things that NFC devices do.

It also pretty much works the same way as using your phone, in which you bring the ring close to the NFC terminal for it to register. Also because it creates its own anonymizing tokens, users won’t need to bring their phone with them once they have set it up.

This means that if you’re looking for a more subtle way of paying for items, or maybe if you’re out exercising and don’t want to carry money on your person, this could be a solution. The ring is expected to begin shipping to customers in December.
