Augmented reality seems like a nice way to blend virtual and the real world together, and Pokemon GO is a great example of the use of augmented reality technology. However the only downside is that the virtual objects aren’t necessarily interacting with the real world objects, meaning there’s still a bit of disjointedness between both tech.
However it seems that researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have come up with a way to make augmented reality more interactive. Dubbed Interactive Dynamic Video, it creates a way for virtual objects to affect real world objects, like you can see in the video above.
According to CSAIL PhD student Abe Davis, “This technique lets us capture the physical behavior of objects, which gives us a way to play with them in virtual space. By making videos interactive, we can predict how objects will respond to unknown forces and explore new ways to engage with videos.”
In fact the video below uploaded by Davis shows how games like Pokemon GO could benefit from this technology, where Pokemon won’t just be overlaid in the real world, but their actions in the game have the potential to affect their surroundings (at least what’s visible on the screen).
