Watching movies in virtual reality can offer up a highly immersive experience. It would almost be like you’re in the cinema, minus the crying babies and minus the annoying moviegoers who forget to put their phones on silent. However movies in augmented reality could also offer up an immersive and dynamic experience.
This seems to be what Microsoft and Legendary are aiming for as both companies have recently announced a partnership which would see Legendary bring movie characters to life with the HoloLens. According to Emily Castel, Chief Marketing Officer at Legendary, “Microsoft HoloLens lets us bring characters from the worlds we create into the real world.”
Castel adds, “Our fans get to interact and have fun with our characters in a completely new way, giving them a unique experience they can share with their friends through video and social media. This is exciting for us, and for the creators we work with.” A good example was actually during the Hollywood premiere of the Warcraft movie where fans got to interact with a hologram version of Orgrim Doomhammer.
In fact with Microsoft now letting anyone purchase the HoloLens, it would open up the door to more similar initiatives in the future. In the meantime you can check out an example of the HoloLens and Warcraft in action in the video above.
