A couple of days ago, McDonald’s announced their plans to give away activity trackers to kids with every Happy Meal purchased. It sounded like a great plan and a rather relevant giveaway in this day and age, but unfortunately it looks like their plans have backfired because there are now numerous reports of users experiencing skin irritation.
According to a report by AP, Terri Hickey, a McDonald’s representative said in an email that the company is “fully investigating this issue”, and that restaurants are “offering our youngest guests an alternative Happy Meal toy,” but beyond that no details were revealed about how widespread the issue is, or what could have been the cause of the problem.
However we’re guessing that it is probably big enough of an issue if the company had to stop the program barely a couple of days since its launch. That being said, this isn’t really that surprising. Wearables company Fitbit had a similar issue a couple of years ago where they were forced to recall their fitness trackers after numerous complaints of skin irritation.
We’re not sure if the fast food giant has plans to restart this program in the future. It would be a pity if they did not since it is a pretty good idea and promotion, albeit rather ironic since McDonald’s isn’t exactly known for its healthy menu.
