If you have stayed at any of the 20 hotels in the United States that operator HEI Hotels and Resorts today confirmed were compromised by malware then you might want to keep an eye on your credit or debit card activity. The hotel operator has confirmed that 20 locations across the country have suffered a major data breach which has exposed card details of countless customers.
Properties that have been affected by this data breach are spread across its Hyatt, Marriott, Starwood and Intercontinental chains. A full list of all affected properties has been made available by HEI Hotels and Resorts on its website.
The systems were infected with malware between March 1st, 2015 to June 21st, 2016. Some 8,000 transactions took place during this time and it’s likely that the company’s point-of-sale systems would have been compromised to steal customer data.
As you would expect, HEI Hotels and Resorts has tendered a formal apology for the incident and has said that it has “mounted a thorough response to investigate and resolve this incident, bolster our data security, and support our customers.”
It also said that this cyberattack has been contained and that customers can continue to use their cards at all of the affected properties without fear of putting their data at risk. If you find a hotel you stayed at in the past year on the list it would be better to take some precautions to ensure you don’t get fraudulent charges on your card.
