FreedomPop today announced a new offer for folks in the United States who might want to have free usage of WhatsApp in 30 countries across the globe. Zero-rated WhatsApp access means that its customers will be able to use WhatsApp for free when they are in any of the 30 supported countries. Interestingly, it has zero-rated WhatsApp at home too, so its customers can enjoy free use of the cross-platform messaging app even in the United States.
For those who are unaware, FreedomPop is a mobile virtual network operation or MVNO which provides basic mobile service often for no charge at all. It’s a viable option for those who really don’t want to spend any money on a mobile plan.
“There really is no reason anyone should have to pay for voice and text in today’s environment,” said Chris Chen, SVP of product at FreedomPop in an interview with VentureBeat. He added that communication services like WhatsApp have eliminated the need for conventional text and voice services and that the zero-rated model is gaining traction in many markets across the globe which is why FreedomPop is looking to take the lead on this in its home market.
The new FreedomPop SIM includes the basic free service which provides 100 voice minutes, 500 text messages and 200MB of data. WhatsApp usage will be free in the United States as well as 30 countries across the globe including but not limited to the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and others.
