The News Feed is integral to the Facebook experience. It’s the first thing you see when you open the social network and it’s where the majority of your interactions with friends and pages take place. The company regularly tweaks News Feed to improve its performance and to serve up content that’s relevant to each individual user. Facebook said today that it’s tweaking News Feed once again, this time the focus is on bringing up news that’s actually useful for you.
Facebook has said that it’s adding a “ranking signal” which is based on whether an item of news is actually informative. The signal will now decide that the news stories which are actually informative are displayed at the top of the News Feed while those considered not so important are relegated down south.
A news item is considered informative if it’s related to a user’s interests, if it prompts greater discussion, or if it provides information about big current events, say like the Olympics in Rio.
Facebook combines the feedback from this new ranking signal with several other metrics to decide which news items should get prime placement in your News Feed and which should be displayed lower.
It has rolled out this News Feed update today and it will gradually get better at understanding what news items are more relevant to each of its billion-plus users.
