Facebook owns two of the most widely used cross-platform messaging services on the planet. WhatsApp is one and arguably the most widely used service, it now offers end-to-end encryption. Not too long after encryption went live for WhatsApp, it was confirmed that Facebook Messenger would get end-to-end encryption as well. The feature is called “Secret Conversation” and it has now surfaced in the beta app.
The Secret Conversation feature has only surfaced in the beta Facebook Messenger at this point in time which means that it’s going to take a while before this feature is made available to everybody.
Users should keep in mind that the Secret Conversation will not be turned on by default, which basically means end-to-end encryption won’t be turned on by default. Users have to manually turn on the feature for each individual conversation that they want to secure.
Moreover, an encrypted conversation is limited to the device it was started on, so you can’t pick up the Secret Conversation you started from your smartphone on your laptop. You won’t even see it online when accessing Facebook through the laptop.
Facebook hasn’t provided a precise release date on which the Secret Conversation feature will be rolled out to everybody. Given that it’s running tests on the feature, it couldn’t be too far from release.
