Facebook is a free service and it promises to always remain free. However, the company does need to generate a significant amount of money to keep the machine running and it does that by serving advertisements. Ads inevitably come to almost every new feature or experience that’s built into Facebook and that’s now happening to Facebook Messenger’s bot platform. Bots in Facebook Messenger will soon be able to send users ads, subscription messages, and promotions.
Facebook has made a change to its Messenger policy which enables companies providing bots to use them to serve ads. Naturally, users will worry about being spammed, and Facebook has detailed how this is going to work.
Users will be in control as they will be able to mute or block bots, aside from the fact that all conversations between bots and people have to be initiated by people who are receiving the messages. Simply put, you will not be served an ad by a bot if you have not initiated a conversation with that bot.
It was only a matter of time before Facebook came up with a crafty way to monetize its Messenger user base. Facebook Messenger has more than one billion monthly users and they can certainly become a significant source of revenue for the world’s largest social network.
