apple_logoSo far all the rumors have referred to this year’s iPhone as the iPhone 7, and understandably so. Last year we had the iPhone 6s, and following Apple’s naming schemes, this year’s iPhone should be known as the iPhone 7. However there have been rumors to suggest that Apple is actually planning to reserve the name for 2017’s model.

But now thanks to fresh rumors from Japanese website Macotakara (via 9to5Mac), it seems that the iPhone 7 name will be sticking around for 2016’s model. Now there are several reasons to believe that the use of the iPhone 7 in 2017 would be more “appropriate”. This is because the 2017 model is rumored to be a dramatic overhaul in terms of design.

This is versus 2016’s iPhone in which from what we have heard, will mostly introduce changes made under the hood, thus making it more fit to have an “S” in its name rather than a new model number. However Macotakara has in the past been pretty reliable with Apple rumors so maybe there’s a chance that they could be right.

In any case take it with a grain of salt, but here’s hoping the September iPhone launch is true so that we can find out the official details soon.
