For many gamers, their Xbox Live Gamertag is very precious and they can’t even stand the thought of losing it. However, due to the recent changes that Microsoft has made to their services agreement, gamers now have to do one thing or otherwise they stand to lose their Xbox Live Gamertag possibly forever. The changes are retroactive which means that it doesn’t matter how old your gamertag is, you have to do this or you will end up losing it.
Microsoft has made a change to its services agreement which mandates that gamers log into Xbox Live every five years if they want to retain their gamertag, Failure will do so will result in the loss of the gamertag.
“In the Microsoft Account or Skype Account section, we’ve added a requirement that you must sign into the Xbox Services at least once in a 5-year period to keep the Xbox gamertag associated with your Microsoft account. We’ve also added that if your account is compromised, we may be required to disable access to certain content,” the amended agreement now reads.
The changes are retroactive, meaning that if you haven’t logged into your Xbox Live account since 2011, you might want to hurry up and do it right now. A gamertag lost then becomes available to other players so you can’t exactly claim it back from Microsoft.
That being said, it’s a generous time limit from Microsoft, because even the most casual of gamers can find a few minutes once every five years to log into Xbox Live just to save their gamertag.
