With the creation of Overwatch, Blizzard has tried to be as inclusive as possible, introducing characters from a variety of backgrounds, races, and genders. They’ve also ensured that its female characters are not overly-provocative and have responded swiftly to correct their mistakes when they are pointed out to them.
Now it seems that Blizzard has landed themselves in a bit of controversy again with Overwatch, and this time it is with one of the skins for the character Symmetra. If you are familiar with your religions, you can probably agree that to a certain extent, this particular skin for Symmetra seems to resemble one of the deities of the Hindu religion.
This has led to religious statesman and president of the Universal Society of Hinduism Rajan Zed to issue a statement asking Blizzard to remove the skin out of respect to their religion. According to Rajan Zed’s statement, he claims that the skin trivializes Hinduism’s highly revered goddess, Devi.
His statement also reads, “In a video game set-up, the player controlled the movements of Devi, while in reality the devotees put the destinies of themselves in the hands of their goddesses. Moreover, Devi and its movements depicted in Overwatch did not match with characterization of the goddesses in the scriptures.” Blizzard has yet to respond to these claims.
