Motorola Says They Can’t Commit To Monthly Security Patches

A report from the other day seemed to refute the initial rumors that Motorola would not be pushing out security updates for its smartphones. It might seem ludicrous that a smartphone OEM would not care about security updates, but as it turns out, the rumors were partly true. After all when there’s smoke, there’s probably fire.

In a statement issued by Motorola to ArsTechnica, the company confirmed that while they will be issuing security patches, it will not be done on a monthly basis that other companies such as Google and Samsung have been doing. Instead they are expected to release them in more “efficient” bundles.

According to the statement, “Motorola understands that keeping phones up to date with Android security patches is important to our customers. We strive to push security patches as quickly as possible. However, because of the amount of testing and approvals that are necessary to deploy them, it’s difficult to do this on a monthly basis for all our devices. It is often most efficient for us to bundle security updates in a scheduled Maintenance Release (MR) or OS upgrade.”

It is unclear as to what the frequency of these releases are, but basically if you’re hoping to get patched up every month, then maybe you might want to look elsewhere.
