Kim Dotcom, most famous for Megaupload and all of the legal troubles that the file sharing service caused for him, said earlier this week that he plans on relaunching the service. It’s not just going to be a relaunch of the original service, he has now revealed that Megaupload 2.0 is going to come to life with the original Megaupload database. The relaunch is scheduled for early next year.
Not a lot of details are available about Megaupload 2.0 at this point in time, but it’s said that the service will provide users with 100GB of free cloud storage and that they will be able to easily sync files through all of their devices without having to worry about data transfer limits. Encryption will be baked into the new service.
To make sure that people come back to Megaupload, Kim Dotcom has said that version 2.0 is going to be launched with the original user database and that most of the accounts will be reinstated with Premium privileges on the new Megaupload. All previous users will be sent an email confirming that they can log into the new Megaupload using their old credentials.
It’s unclear how Dotcom was able to preserve a copy of the original database during all the legal brouhaha that he went through, but he’s going to put it to good use now. A confirmed launch date has not been provided but he says that Megaupload 2.0 will go live in January 2017, which incidentally coincides with the five-year anniversary of the 2012 closure of the original Megaupload.
