LG To Restructure Mobile Division Following Poor LG G5 Sales

Project Ara has been in the works for a while now, and when LG launched the LG G5, it was assumed that this would allow LG to corner the market on modular phones. In fact LG had a pretty good idea as its modules were simple, straightforward, and easy to use, but unfortunately the handset did not take off the way LG had imagined.

So much so that according to reports, LG has since dismissed several of their staff and have since announced that they will be restructuring its mobile division. They will also be creating a special “program management office” that will oversee product development for the foreseeable future, and the division will answer directly to LG Mobile’s head Cho Juno.

In terms of smartphones, LG has done well with is previous handsets like the LG G3 and the LG G4, but we guess users weren’t quite as ready to get on board modular smartphones just yet. It is possible that due to the expensive nature of these modules that might have put customers off.

There was also a lack of variety that wasn’t exactly very compelling either. It will be interesting to see how well Google’s Project Ara will do following the lukewarm reception of the LG G5. In the meantime Project Ara has been set for a commercial release come January 2017, so we guess we’ll have to wait until then to see how it does.
