It has long been rumored that the Galaxy Note 7 is going to be Samsung’s first smartphone to feature iris scanning. For the past few years, we’ve heard that this feature is going to make its way to Samsung’s flagship handsets and this time around it looks like this is actually happening. New pictures of the handset have leaked out of China today confirming that the Galaxy Note 7 is going to have an iris scanner.
The pictures also show how the iris scanner will be configured when this form of biometric verification is set up for the very first time. Users will have to hold the Galaxy Note 7 25-35 cm away from their face with the screen facing towards them and position their eyes in the circles shown on the screen to configure the feature.
Once that’s done, all they will need to do to gain access to their device is simply look at the iris scanner which is placed right alongside the earpiece. In theory, this verification method should prove faster than the fingerprint sensor, and Samsung’s handsets don’t really have the fastest fingerprint sensors out there.
It goes without saying that if Samsung gets good feedback about this feature it’s going to bring it to other handsets as well, there’s a big possibility that we might find iris scanning on the Galaxy S8 next year. Samsung is going to announce the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2nd.
