Several years ago we reported on a company called iLumi. The company had launched a connected LED light bulb then that was similar to the Philips Hue in the sense that users could control the device with a smartphone app and could also change its color according to the user’s preference.
It looks like the company has returned with a new Kickstarter campaign for a new set of LED lights called the Smartstrip. Unlike the the company’s previous product, the Smartstrip is basically a strip of LED lights that can also be controlled via an accompanying smartphone app. If this sounds familiar, it is because Philips has a similar product called the Hue Lightstrip Plus.
The benefit to having a strip of LEDs is that it allows users to place them and light up places that would normally not have illumination, or would not be able to achieve the same effect with a regular set of bulbs. The lights are also dynamic and can also be set to pulse/change color according to the music that is played on your phone.
The strips are also safe for use outdoors meaning that you can put them outside without worrying that they’ll get damaged by rain. Like we said, Philips has a similar product so at the end of the day, the price and features will be what sets them apart, but if Philips’ offering wasn’t to your satisfaction, maybe the Smartstrip could be a good alternative.
