Google updated Play Books last year with a new vertical scrolling experience so that those who used the app to read comics could get a better user experience. It has been working to improve the experience even further and has announced today that it’s using machine learning to make it easier to read comic books. The new feature, announced today at San Diego Comic-Con 2016, is called Bubble Zoom.
Bubble Zoom is a new way to read digital comics on smartphones and tablets. It uses the same technology that Google utilizes to recognize objects in photos. The system has been trained to identify speech bubbles in comics so Bubble Zoom expands the speech bubbles one-tap-at-a-time, making it very easy to read comics on a mobile device.
The feature is capable of automatically identifying and expanding each speech bubble for readability which means users can read digital comics one-handed without any problems. All of this happens without compromising on the full-page experience and making users pan around to see the entire comic.
Google announced today that Bubble Zoom is available on the latest version of Google Play Books for Android as a technical preview with all Marvel and DC collected volumes being supported. It’s celebrating the soft launch of this feature with 50 percent off on selected DC and Marvel comics in the Google Play Store until July 24th.
