GM and Lyft announced a new car rental service earlier this year called Express Drive. It’s a flexible all-inclusive rental program that enables those who want to drive for Lyft but don’t have a car of their own to rent one from General Motors. Express Drive was initially launched in Chicago back in March this year and it was later expanded to Boxton, Baltimore, and Washington, DC. It’s now being expanded to a handful of additional cities.
Express Drive helps those out who want to drive for Lyft but don’t own a car. They can get a Chevrolet Equinox as a rental from GM, they have to pay $100 per week for the car plus 20 cents per mile if they are taking less than 40 rides per week.
Those who take more than 40 but below 64 rides pay a lower per mile cost while those who take more than 65 rides per week don’t pay a per mile fee. The driver will have to pay for the fuel in all scenarios.
Chevrolet will also make its upcoming Bolt electric car available through Express Drive while the extended-range electric 2016 Volt will be available as well. The company says that Lyft drivers have so far earned more than $2 million since Express Drive was launched in March this year.
GM and Lyft are now expanding Express Drive to San Francisco where the program will go live later this summer, after that it will be expanded to Los Angeles and later Denver in the fall.
