Facebook today announced that its standalone Messenger app has reached a major milestone. Facebook Messenger is now being used by more than one billion people across the globe. It also happens to be the most popular iOS app after Facebook itself. WhatsApp, the popular cross-platform messaging service that Facebook acquired a couple of years ago, hit the one billion users milestone earlier this year in February.
Facebook also revealed that the bot platform it unveiled for Messenger at the F8 developer conference a couple of months ago now includes more than 18,000 bots.
Messenger head David Marcus thanked everyone around the world who uses Facebook Messenger and said that the company is now looking forward to connecting the next billion users. It’s focused on creating the best possible experiences in modern day communications.
Facebook Messenger has witnessed rapid growth in 2016, bringing in about 100 million users every three months. It reached 800 million users back in January and reached 900 million by April.
The standalone app is the second most downloaded app on iOS after the main Facebook app. Android users have downloaded Facebook Messenger over one billion times and users rely on the service to send more than one billion messages every month.
On to the next billion!
