From today until July 12, Amazon is giving an incentive for Alexa users to use and order something with the Amazon Echo voice-enabled assistant. By asking “Alexa, what are your Prime Day Deals?” users make themselves eligible for a $10 discount on orders of $20 or more. Of course, this only works if you shop using Alexa.
July 12 is the second Amazon Prime Day, during which Amazon will have more than 100,000 deals accessible only to Amazon Prime members. Amazon Prime is a paid subscription that lets Amazon users benefit from free shipping, access to paid news (Washington Post), video content, restaurant delivery (where applicable) and more.
It has been a huge success for Amazon, to the point that in certain places like Paris, France, Prime has been deemed to have the potential to destabilize the local economy. Earlier this year, Amazon said that Prime membership had increased by 50%. Walmart had recently launched a competing delivery service, and we will keep an eye on its success.
Prime Day is becoming quite big. According to Amazon, last year’s Prime Day was already bigger than Black Friday for the retailer – despite the relatively low amount of product choices. Amazon has pledged to have more products available in even more countries going forward.
Finally, Amazon will offer Echo-exclusive deals to promote and reward this rising voice-based platform. It has been so successful that some competitors will soon come online, including Samsung’s Otto and maybe one from Apple.
