Chromecast makes it very easy to stream content on the biggest screen in your home. Most content services like Netflix and Hulu already support Chromecast, making it very easy to cast content, but when it comes to local files one usually needs other software to make it happen. Now one of the most widely used media players is preparing to add Chromecast support which would make it very easy for millions of people to cast local content to their TV.
VLC is perhaps the most popular media player available for a wide variety of platforms and devices. It can play just about any format which is why it’s preferred by millions of people across the globe.
The team behind VLC has talked about bringing Chromecast support to the app and now it has finally done it. The feature has been added to a pre-release build of VLC version 3.0 and it’s only a matter of time before it comes to the stable release of the app.
VLC’s pre-release build isn’t stable enough for daily use but it does give an idea of how the feature will work on the app. It’s accessible through a new option under the Tools menu called “Render Output” where users can easily find local Google Cast enabled devices to which content can be streamed.
It’s unclear at this point in time how long it’s going to take for this feature to be added to the stable public release of VLC. Shouldn’t take too long now, though.
