Fiat Chrysler recently formed a partnership with Google to work on self-driving cars. The partnership will see Google’s self-driving car technology being baked into Fiat’s Pacifica minivans. New reports suggest that Fiat is now looking to team up with Uber on self-driving cars. The ride-hailing service is known to be working on similar technology, however, talks between the two companies appear to be in very early stages at this point in time.
Bloomberg reports that discussions between Fiat Chrysler and Uber are in very early stages and that Uber is also talking to other car manufacturers for a similar partnership, so there’s always the possibility that a deal might not materialize with Fiat Chrysler.
We’re seeing a trend emerge in which conventional car companies are teaming up with tech companies for self-driving cars. Lyft recently received a significant investment from General Motors, Volkswagen has invested $300 million in Gett, and Apple has invested $1 billion in China’s Didi Chuxing. It’s certainly isn’t going to surprise anybody if Uber and Fiat team up for self-driving cars.
Uber recently offered a glimpse at the work it has been doing on autonomous driving, there is still a long way to go before these cars completely take over from human drivers, but it’s clear that work is going full speed ahead and it’s only a matter of time before self-driving cars become the norm.
