It appears that Tumblr is on the verge of launching a new live video service. Some evidence has surfaced online from a promotional page for this as yet unannounced service, which reveals that Tumblr is looking to compete against the likes of Periscope, Twitch, and Facebook Live. Live video streaming services are gaining traction these days so perhaps Tumblr sees significant growth potential to pursue something similar.
Twitter user David Chartier has discovered a promotional web page which shows that Live Video is coming to Tumblr. The name is pretty self-explanatory – the service will enable people to live stream whatever they want using their smartphones.
The web page can be accessed at livevideo.tumblr.com. It lists June 21st as the launch date, which is today, and mentions programs of live streams which start at 4 pm EST. A live broadcast from the surface of Mars will kick things off.
Tumblr is a very popular blogging platform that’s used by over half a billion people across the globe. It has a huge potential user base for this service that will go up against established rivals like Facebook Live and Periscope.
Despite the web page going live early, Tumblr has still not made an official announcement, but given that today is mentioned as the launch day perhaps we will hear something about Live Video on Tumblr in the next couple of hours.
Yep, Tumblr is adding live video. Let the games begin! https://t.co/bM6LyplYrk
