Tumblr Confirms Live Video Feature

It was reportedly recently that Tumblr will soon launch a new feature that will enable its users to stream live video. Tumblr has now officially confirmed the Live Video feature, by the end of today its 500 million+ users will be able to broadcast themselves directly into their followers’ dashboards and vice versa. Tumblr now joins the list of companies offering similar functionality, companies like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Tumblr’s offering is a bit different from others in the live streaming space because it hasn’t built a streaming service on its on. Rather, it’s enabling users to simply use its blogging service as a publishing and discovery platform for live streams that are powered by YouNow, Kanvas, Upclose, and YouTube. It’s unclear if Facebook Live will be supported at some point in the future.

Tumblr users can post live videos through YouNow, Kanvas, Upclose, and YouTube. Live videos posted on Tumblr can be reblogged like any other post.

Live streams don’t disappear after they’re finished so if you’re not able to catch a stream live don’t worry, you can always go back to that blog and watch it as many times as you want.

Users will automatically get a notification when anyone they follow goes live. Their video will be pinned to the top of the dashboard to make sure that users don’t miss out on broadcasts as they happen.
